Unlocking the True Potential of Your Paddocks: Understanding Pasture Biomass Variability and the Power of Objective Measurement

Nik is deeply immersed in the world of agricultural technology and pasture management here in Australia, and spent years grappling with the nuances of pasture biomass, specifically, Total Standing Dry Matter (TSDM) in kg/ha. He believes it's a metric that goes beyond what meets the eye, revealing the real feed availability for livestock while accounting for the dry, digestible plant material across vast landscapes (learn more here: Understanding Your Cibo Labs TSDM kg/ha).

In Nik's experience, paddocks aren't uniform canvases. Variability in biomass distribution can make or break your management decisions. Nik has provided an example to provide some perspective... take a look at the below images from real Australian paddocks.

In the left image, you see a lush green paddock with a herd of sheep grazing. It looks great, right? Yet, upon closer inspection, patches of shorter grass and sparse areas hint at uneven growth. The image to the right shows black cattle scattered across a field with taller, drier grass. Here, the mix of green and brown suggests higher dead matter in some spots, potentially reducing overall digestibility.

These visuals highlight what we observe from a single vantage point across a paddock, might not reflect the objective biomass levels. Without systematic testing and sampling in various sections, considering factors like soil type, topography, moisture, and plant growth stages, our visual assessment is incomplete. For instance, actively growing pastures might clock in at 15-30% dry matter, translating to TSDM values that vary wildly from one corner to another. High dead dry matter (DDM) areas could signal fire hazards or the need for supplementation, while green-dominant zones offer prime grazing.

Now, scale this up to paddocks spanning hundreds of hectares. Manually sampling and examining these expanses can take several hours per session. If you're doing this weekly to track seasonal changes or monthly for broader trends, the person-hours add up quickly, becoming a significant cost in time and resources. While this is labor-intensive and Nik states  "without PastureKey, pasture assessments are heavily prone to human bias and a human's 'accurate prediction' which we find consistently - inconsistent with a large variation from person to person looking at the same paddocks".

This is where innovative solutions from Cibo Labs can help. By leveraging satellite-based monitoring, we provide weekly snapshots of paddock-level TSDM kg/ha, derived from fractional cover analysis that breaks down green, dead, and bare ground components. It's an objective, data-driven layer that complements your on-ground efforts. You get the birds-eye view across all parts of each paddocks, not just the parts you walk through.

In Nik's work with Cibo Labs, he's seen how combining these satellite-derived metrics with ground-truthing (like visual inspections and growth stage assessments) leads to objective decisions. Nik shares "if a paddock shows low seasonal deciles in TSDM, meaning it's drier than historical averages, you can adjust stocking rates accordingly."

The result? Healthier pastures, more efficient operations, and ultimately, better bottom lines.

So if you're managing grazing lands anywhere across the country, consider integrating satellite services into your toolkit. It's not about replacing boots-on-the-ground work; it's about enhancing it with scalable, timely data.
